Updates, Backups & Device Safety
Keep devices patched, backed up, and protected so one mistake or theft does not become a disaster.
Why this matters
Old software and lost devices cause many break-ins. Updates, backups, and quick reporting protect your work with very little effort.
Updates Close Known Holes
Attackers aim at weak spots that updates already fix. Install updates quickly, but only from the official settings screen or app store.
In real life: When a car maker finds a faulty brake, it sends a repair notice. An update is that repair. Criminals look for people who have not applied it yet.
Backups Save You From Ransomware
Keep copies of important files on a separate drive or cloud account that is not always connected. Test that you can restore them.
In real life: Keeping a photocopy of your passport in the same bag does not help if the bag is stolen. A backup must live somewhere else, like a cloud account or a drive at home.
Your practice task
It is a busy week at the office. Pick the safest action for each device situation.
How to do it
- Read the office policy in the box above.
- Read each situation.
- Pick the safest action for each one.
- Press Run proof.
Practice it for free in the app. You get instant checks that show what you got right and what to fix. A lesson takes about two minutes and you can try as many times as you like.
Quick reference: Device Hygiene
Small routine habits stop most common attacks.
Update: official settings only. Back up: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 off-site. Lost device: report immediately. Found USB: never plug in.
